BASEBALL;
First of all I am very sorry to hear of the passing
of Dick Radatz a star relief pitcher in the 1960's. During his
heyday with the Boston Red Sox in the early 60's, he may have
been the premier fireman in the American League.
The 6'6" Radatz was dubbed " The Monster
" by none other then Mickey Mantle himself. He threw
a sidearm 95 MPH fastball. Imposing ? You bet !!!
May he rest in peace.
The Baseball Hall Of Fame failed to induct anyone
on the Veteran's ballot. What a shame.Sixty votes were required.
The top vote getters were Gil Hodges and Ron Santo with 52
votes. My all time favorite Tony Oliva received 45. Oliva's
former Twin team mate Jim Kaat took in 43.
My question is...What were the voters on this
ballot looking at ? Gil Hodges was a cornerstone on some great
Dodger teams. He also went on to a respectful career as a Major
League manager.
The Chicago Cubs of the 60's would have been
totally forgotten if not for three great players, Ernie Banks,
Billy Williams a Ron Santo. Ron deserves to be in the HOF. He
was a solid and steady performer year in and year out.
Tony Oliva ? He was the American League version of
the outstanding Roberto Clemente. The numbers he put up during
his prime seasons were more then respectable and far and away
should have led to his induction. Was he respected by his peers
? Ask them...
Jim Kaat...Just shy of 300 career of victories.
Kaat later became a top notch glove man. He is possibly the best
defense pitcher of all-time.
